GitHub has introduced a new enterprise role that expands access to Copilot usage analytics beyond traditional administrator boundaries. The “View enterprise Copilot metrics” role allows designated users to access usage metrics APIs and dashboards without requiring full enterprise admin or billing manager privileges.
Democratizing Usage Insights#
Previously, accessing Copilot usage data required enterprise admin or billing manager status—roles that carry significant administrative power beyond mere reporting access. The new fine-grain permission addresses this by creating a dedicated role focused solely on metrics visibility.
Organizations can now assign the “View enterprise Copilot metrics” role to team leads, engineering managers, or analytics specialists who need to track adoption and effectiveness without granting them broader administrative capabilities. This separation of concerns follows security best practices around principle of least privilege.
What the Role Unlocks#
Users assigned the new role gain access to:
- Copilot Usage Metrics Dashboard: Visual analytics showing adoption patterns, usage trends, and engagement across the enterprise
- Usage Metrics APIs: Programmatic access for building custom reports, integrating with business intelligence tools, or automating usage tracking
Enterprise admins and billing managers retain their default access—the new role supplements rather than replaces existing permissions.
Configuration Requirements#
Enabling the feature requires two configuration steps:
- Enable the policy: Navigate to AI Controls > Copilot and ensure the “Copilot usage metrics” policy is active
- Assign the role: Under People > Enterprise roles, assign the “View enterprise Copilot metrics” role to designated users
Once configured, assigned users can immediately begin exploring usage data through both the dashboard interface and APIs.
Strategic Visibility for AI Adoption#
As enterprises scale their Copilot deployments, understanding usage patterns becomes critical for measuring ROI and identifying adoption gaps. The new role makes it easier to distribute this visibility across organizations—enabling engineering leadership to track their teams’ AI assistant utilization without creating security concerns from over-privileged accounts.
The feature is available now for GitHub Enterprise customers, with the UI currently in public preview and subject to changes as GitHub refines the experience based on customer feedback.
