GitHub just added Grok Code Fast 1, xAI’s coding model, to Copilot in public preview. The model is now available across every major development environment where Copilot runs.

Availability
#

Grok Code Fast 1 is accessible through the Copilot chat model picker in:

  • Visual Studio Code
  • Visual Studio
  • JetBrains IDEs (IntelliJ, PyCharm, WebStorm, etc.)
  • Xcode
  • Eclipse
  • GitHub.com (Copilot Chat)
  • GitHub Mobile

The model works in agent, ask, and edit modes—the same interaction patterns developers already use with other Copilot models.

Who Gets Access
#

Grok Code Fast 1 is available for:

  • GitHub Copilot Pro and Pro+ subscribers
  • GitHub Copilot Business customers (requires admin opt-in)
  • GitHub Copilot Enterprise customers (requires admin opt-in)

For Business and Enterprise plans, administrators must enable the Grok Code Fast 1 policy in Copilot settings before users can access the model.

Model Choice Expands
#

This addition continues GitHub’s strategy of offering multiple model options within Copilot. Developers can now choose between:

  • OpenAI models (GPT-4, GPT-5-Codex)
  • Anthropic Claude models (Sonnet 4.5)
  • xAI’s Grok Code Fast 1

The multi-model approach lets developers select the best model for their specific task or coding style. Different models have different strengths—some excel at explanation, others at code generation, others at refactoring.

Why Grok Code Fast 1?
#

The “Fast” in the name signals the model’s positioning: optimized for speed while maintaining code quality. This addresses a common developer need—quick, responsive AI assistance that doesn’t interrupt flow.

xAI’s entry into GitHub Copilot also validates the multi-vendor model marketplace GitHub is building. Rather than locking developers into a single AI provider, Copilot becomes a platform where multiple AI companies can reach developers.

The Bigger Picture
#

GitHub’s model picker strategy transforms Copilot from a single-AI product into an AI platform. Developers get choice, AI companies get distribution, and GitHub maintains its position as the interface layer where developers interact with AI.

This is similar to how cloud providers offer multiple database or compute options—the platform provides consistency while the underlying technology varies based on user preference and workload requirements.

For xAI, GitHub Copilot provides immediate distribution to millions of developers across the most popular development environments. That’s difficult to replicate by building standalone tools.

Getting Started
#

If you have GitHub Copilot Pro, Pro+, Business, or Enterprise, look for Grok Code Fast 1 in the model picker in your IDE or on github.com. Business and Enterprise users should check with their administrators to ensure the policy is enabled.

The model is in public preview, so GitHub is gathering feedback on performance, accuracy, and developer experience to refine the integration.
