Google just launched Gemini Enterprise, their answer to Microsoft 365 Copilot. It integrates AI directly into Gmail, Docs, Sheets, and Meet. Same pitch as Microsoft: make knowledge workers more productive through embedded AI.
What It Does#
Gemini Enterprise handles the expected use cases. Draft emails, summarize documents, analyze data, generate presentations. It works across Workspace apps with shared context, so the AI remembers what you’re working on as you move between tools.
Google’s also offering custom model training on enterprise data. Companies can fine-tune Gemini on their specific documents, terminology, and workflows. That’s meaningful for industries with specialized knowledge.
The Competitive Angle#
Microsoft has been selling Copilot to enterprises for over a year. They have momentum, customer relationships, and deployment experience. Google is catching up.
But Google has advantages. Workspace has massive adoption, especially in tech, education, and international markets. Gemini models are competitive with GPT-4 in benchmarks. And Google’s pricing undercuts Microsoft’s.
The question is whether being second to market matters when both products are still early. Enterprise AI adoption is just beginning. There’s room for multiple winners if the products deliver value.
The Integration Challenge#
Embedding AI into productivity tools sounds simple. It’s not. The AI needs context, understanding of what you’re trying to accomplish, and judgment about when to assist versus stay silent.
Get it right, and AI becomes invisible infrastructure that makes work faster. Get it wrong, and it’s annoying autocorrect that generates more problems than it solves.
Microsoft is iterating through these issues in production. Google gets to learn from Microsoft’s mistakes. That’s worth something.
What Enterprises Actually Want#
Based on enterprise AI deployments so far, businesses care about: data security, compliance, audit trails, and predictable costs. The AI capabilities matter less than trust and governance.
Google has enterprise credentials from decades of Workspace deployment. They understand compliance requirements and data residency. That matters more than model benchmarks when selling to Fortune 500 IT departments.
The Honest Assessment#
Gemini Enterprise is a solid product entering a growing market. It’s not revolutionary. It’s Google doing what Google does well: taking an emerging category and building a competitive offering with good integration and reasonable pricing.
Whether it wins market share depends on execution, not technology. The product is good enough. Now it’s about sales, support, and customer success.
