Architecting the future of software, cloud, and DevOps. I turn tech chaos into breakthrough innovation, leading teams to extraordinary results in our AI-powered world. Follow for game-changing insights on modern architecture and leadership.

Perplexity just made a massive move: their AI-powered Comet browser is now free for everyone worldwide.

This is a significant shift. When Comet launched in July 2025, it was exclusive to Perplexity Max subscribers at $200 per month. Now it’s available to anyone, anywhere.

My experience with Comet
#

I’ve been using Comet for the last 3-4 months alongside my default Chrome browser, and it’s been transformative. The AI assistant seamlessly integrates into browsing, offering real-time help with tasks like summarizing content, filling out forms, and even booking services directly within the browser.

The workflow reduction is noticeable. I find myself switching between tools less often, and the contextual assistance actually works. It’s not perfect, but it’s the first browser that feels like it’s actively helping rather than just displaying content.

What critics are saying
#

The reviews have been largely positive, with some important caveats:

TechRadar called it “glimpses of how AI browsing can shift from passive viewing to active doing,” praising its ability to automate tasks like scheduling events and managing online orders.

Tom’s Guide went further, stating it “puts Comet in a space of its own” and that they “don’t think I can go back to Chrome” after trying it.

The criticism focuses on two main areas:

  • Performance issues: Some users report occasional lags and the need for further refinements
  • Privacy concerns: The AI’s extensive access to personal data has raised questions about data handling

What makes Comet different
#

Comet isn’t just another browser with AI features tacked on. It’s designed to fundamentally change web interaction:

  • AI-powered search that answers questions without leaving the page
  • Smart summarization of articles and content
  • Task automation for scheduling, emails, and routine work
  • Contextual assistance that understands what you’re doing

The strategic timing
#

This global rollout comes at an interesting moment. Google just announced their own AI-powered Chrome features, and the browser market is heating up with AI integration.

By making Comet free, Perplexity is expanding their user base dramatically while competing directly with Chrome’s new AI features.

Comet Plus
#

Alongside the free version, Perplexity introduced Comet Plus at $5/month, offering direct access to high-quality journalism from trusted publishers while ensuring fair compensation in the AI era.

The real question
#

Is this the beginning of the post-search era? When AI can understand context, summarize content, and take actions on your behalf, do we still need traditional search engines and web browsing?

Based on my experience, Comet’s global availability might be the first step toward answering that question.
